Embossed image and depressed image




Usually light shines down from above, the most common light sources being the sun, street lights, ceiling lights etc. Thus our brain automatically translates white-line-above/dark-line-below as an embossed image and dark-line-above/white-line-below as a depressed image. An embossed image changes into a depressed image when the light source is positioned below the images instead of above.







If we turn the images upside down then (A) turnes into a depressed image and (B) turnes into an embossed image because the brain still thinks that the light source is coming from above.
